The area is numbed during implant placement, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some soreness and swelling are normal afterward and usually improve as the area heals.

Dental implant treatment usually takes several months from start to finish. If a damaged tooth first needs to be removed, we may allow the area time to heal before placing the implant, although in some cases the tooth can be removed and the implant placed at the same visit. Bone grafting, when needed, can also add healing time. After implant placement, the implant typically needs several months to integrate with the jawbone before the final tooth is completed.

With healthy gums, good home care and regular dental visits, the implant itself can last for many years and often decades. The crown or other restoration attached to it may eventually need repair or replacement from normal wear.
